Diseases Treated with Stem Cells
23rd September 2021
The unique ability of stem cells to transform into different types of cells has revolutionized healthcare and medicine. About a decade ago, the use of cord blood stem cells was limited. But today, they can treat more than 80 life-threatening diseases. Hence, doctors around the globe are recommending stem cell therapy over conventional therapies.
If you are expecting a child, then we have some good news for you! At your baby's birth, you get the opportunity to safeguard your baby's health by storing their precious cord blood stem cells. A cord blood bank preserves your baby's stem cells so that they are readily available if and whenever needed in the future.
The baby's cord blood contains about 10-times more stem cells than bone marrow. Moreover, these stem cells can be used to treat life-threatening blood and genetic disorders. In the case of a cord blood transplant, stem cells are injected into the patient's bloodstream. The stem cells then travel to the infected site and repair the damaged cells and tissue.
Diseases Treated with Stem Cells
The cord blood stem cells have been approved by Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) to treat more than 80 life-threatening conditions. Here's an overview of diseases treated by stem cells:
A. Blood Cancers | B. Non-Malignant Blood Disorders | C. Immune Disorders | D. Metabolic Disorders |
Leukemia Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Myelodysplastic Syndromes Other blood cancers |
Anaemias Hereditary Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes Inherited Red blood cell abnormalities Inherited platelet abnormalities |
Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (SCID) Neutropenias Phagocyte Disorders Genetic Disorders of the Immune System Other Immune System Disorders |
Leukodystrophy disorders Lysosomal storage diseases Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) Other metabolic diseases |
Ongoing Clinical Trials:
A clinical trial is the study of the effect of an emerging therapy in human patients.
Stem cell therapy may slow the progression of rare diseases and provide a new treatment option for treating rare and incurable diseases such as AIDS, Cancers, and certain neurological disorders. Today, there are more than 5,000 ongoing clinical trials involving stem cells, and every day brand-new clinical trials are added to the list.
Alzheimer's Disease | Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) | Ischemic Stroke |
Autism | Crohn's disease | Liver cirrhosis |
Brain Tumour | Diabetes Type 1 | Lupus |
Cardiomyopathy | Epidermolysis Bullosa | Multiple Sclerosis |
Cartilage repair | Ewing Sarcoma | Myocardial Infarction |
Cerebral palsy | Huntington's Disease | Parkinson's Disease |
Cleft Palate Repair (Alveolar) | Ischemic Heart Disease | Rheumatoid Arthritis |
Sometimes, when standard treatment options for rare or incurable diseases fail, the patients may participate in clinical research trials. These patients then receive new and promising therapies through clinical research trials. Sometimes, these clinical trials may prove to be life-saving for the patients.
